Parents heartbroken as baby girl dies after skull and spine were broken during forceps delivery

Parents heartbroken as baby girl dies after skull and spine were broken during forceps delivery

In undergrad part of my dual major was Women’s Health Studies.  I have read and researched maternal and child mortality rates.  The US has one of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in the developed world.  In addition to the research I have heard countless horror stories from mothers about their tramautic experience in the delivery rooms across the US.  When the time comes for me to have children, I will not be delivering in the hospital! For any expecting mothers PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do extensive research on the hospital and the physician if you choose to deliver at the hospital.  The following story is heart breaking, but I thought I should share it.  The original article can be found with pictures at:

The parents of a baby girl who died after her skull was crushed during a forceps delivery are suing the Texas hospital where she was born.  Rachel Melancon had experienced a healthy pregnancy, but when a doctor at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas used forceps during the birth on December 28 it had devastating consequences.  As the medical device was clamped around her baby’s head, the 24-year-old and her fiance Allen Coats claim they heard a popping sound as their daughter’s skull was crushed.

The baby girl, named Olivia Marie, survived for five more days after being left brain damaged and with a fractured skull and severed spinal cord.  Her parents plan to sue their obstetrician, Dr George T Backardjiev, and the Medical Center of Southeast Texas.  The couple have also started a Facebook campaign page to petition against the use of forceps in all births.  Ms Melancon, at 4ft 11in and weighing 95lb before she became pregnant, had asked for a cesarean section when her baby was overdue and large, considering her mother’s petite frame.

She claimed the baby was facing the wrong way and Dr Backardjiev tried to turn her with his hands.  ‘When he couldn’t do that, he took the small forceps to try to pull the baby out. He kept going and even put his foot up on the bed trying to pull,’ she said.  ‘When he touched the top and side of the skull, we heard a pop, like clay cracking in pottery and heard her skull crush.’

Ms Melancon was rushed off for an emergency cesarean but when Olivia was finally delivered the family say she was unable breathe.  Their baby was rushed to Hermann Hospital, where the parents were told that she had suffered numerous fractures.

In a post on their Facebook page, Ms Melancon said she heard ‘2 big popping sounds (it was her skull)’ as the doctor used the forceps.

She claimed her baby was then left in the birth canal while the doctor stitched Ms Melancon up before she could have the emergency C-section.

‘I felt her pulled out of me and the room was silent. No crying baby and they told Allen to leave the room. That’s the last I remember before waking up to my baby girl lifeless,’ she said in a heartbreaking post.  The parents kept a vigil at Olivia’s bedside for five days before she was taken off life support.  Her heart valve and tissue behind her legs and knees were donated to save another baby’s life.

Hospital chief executive Matt Roberts released a statement saying that Olivia’s death ‘rips at our hearts’. The statement added that the hospital could not comment on specific cases but confirmed that a review would be carried out.

As well as a Facebook page to detail their experiences and raise awareness, the couple have set up a Go Fund Me page to pay for the funeral and try to pass Olivia’s Law to ban the use of forceps.

Risks To Mother and Baby During Forceps Delivery:

In a forceps delivery a metal instrument, shaped like salad tongs, is clamped around the baby’s head.  They are used to either guide the baby out the birth canal or, if the baby is facing the wrong way, to rotate the baby.  The mother is generally given an episiotomy – an incision from the vagina to the anus – as there is an increased likelihood of tearing.  It is considered a risky delivery, with the Mayo Clinic reminding expectant mothers that generally when a forceps delivery is recommended a C-Section is also an option.  In the mother, forceps can cause long-term urinary or fecal incontinence; genital tears; and damage to the uterus or bladder.  For babies, forceps can cause fractures, bleeding within the skull and facial injuries.

Pregnant nurse: I was fired for refusing flu vaccine

Pregnant nurse: I was fired for refusing flu vaccine

The other day I came across a very interesting article.  When I recently started volunteering at a local hospital I was told I would be required to receive a flu vaccine.  I provided the proper documentation (religious reasons) and did not get vaccinated.  As a child neither my three siblings nor me were vaccinated.  Our parents believed the vaccines would harm us more than protect us.  We were not sickly children and in fact I can count on one hand the number of times I have had a serious cold.  One of them being after I received the mandatory vaccinations for college.  They refused to accept my religious reasons and I was forced to be vaccinated.  I remember receiving approximately 8 shots all at once and in the following weeks I was sick as a dog.  My body was not used to those toxins and did not react very well.  Ever since I have not gotten another vaccination.  When I have children, they won’t be vaccinated either. The original article can be found at:

A pregnant nurse has been fired for refusing to comply with her employer’s mandatory flu vaccine requirement. Dreonna Breton lost her job as a nurse at Horizons Healthcare Services in Lancaster, Penn., after she told her bosses she would not be getting a flu shot along with her fellow employees, reports CNN.

Breton, who is three months pregnant, told CNN she refused the shot because she was worried the vaccine might complicate her pregnancy. She said she has suffered multiple miscarriages in the past and isn’t willing to take any chances this time around.

“I’m a healthy person,” she told CNN Sunday. “I take care of my body. For me, the potential risk was not worth it. I’m not gonna be the one percent of people that has a problem.”

After refusing the flu shot, Breton offered to wear a mask as an added precaution, but her offer was not enough for Horizons, which released the following statement to CBS:

Like our requirements for TB skin testing and MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination as a condition of employment, mandatory flu immunization protects our patients, employees, and community from getting this potentially serious infection.

Horizon, which is jointly owned by Lancaster General Health, Reading Health System, Pinnacle Health System and Penn State Hershey, does allow some exemptions to its policy, but Breton did not qualify, according to NBC affiliate WGAL.

And while Breton insists that not enough is known about any potential risks associated with flu vaccines, Dr. Alan Peterson, the director of environmental and community medicine at Lancaster General Health, told Penn Live that the benefits of vaccination far outweigh any possible complications.

“œI would say she has a million times greater chance of … having a problem if she gets the disease rather than the vaccine,” Peterson told the site, noting that pregnant women are at risk to the flu because pregnancy changes the expectant mother’s immune system.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists agrees with Peterson, advising pregnant women to be vaccinated as an “essential element of prenatal care,” per CBS.

The Centers for Disease Control is also solidly in favor of vaccination, noting on its website that “everyone who is at least 6 months of age should get a flu vaccine this season” and singling out pregnant women as one of the groups for whom receiving the shot is “especially important.”

70 yr old looks 30 reveals fountain of youth

I recently read an amazing article and had to share it!
The original article found at:

Her mother and grandmother both died of breast cancer at 47, and 36 years old, respectively. Her grandmother’s sisters died of cancer at early ages. Diabetes runs in her family. Annette Larkins is in perfect health and doesn’t take aspirin. In fact, she doesn’t take any medication at all, at least by the conventional modern definition. She is a fanatic of REAL medicine and lives by the quote, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ― Hippocrates

Mrs. Larkins grows a plethora of fruit, vegetables, and herbs around and inside of her house. She collects rainwater and makes gallons of juice from what she grows. Wheatgrass is one of her specialties. She grows her own and drinks the juice regularly. Yet another anecdotal case of raw food and juicing providing overall health and endless youth.

Looking for an alternative to toothpastes loaded with sulfates and other toxic ingredients such as fluoride? Mainstream science has now fully recognized the ‘miracle’ powers of coconut oil to not only combat tooth decay and drastically improve overall mouth health, but also to specifically crush a yeast known as candida albicans that can lead to deadly infections. This ‘news’ likely comes as nothing more than further confirmation for many, as natural health practicioners have been recommending coconut oil for years.

The research comes from the Athlone Institute of Technology, where Ireland-based scientists examined the effects of natural and digested coconut oil on common strains of bacteria within the mouth. What they found was that not only did the coconut oil effectively inhibit a majority of the bacteria strains single-handedly, but it was also particularly harmful to candida albicans. This is important when considering the fact that an excessive amount of the yeast known as candida albicans can be brought upon by a poor diet consisting of processed foods and sugar.

Candida infection, also known as Candida overgrowth or the ‘candy disease’, can be associated with symptoms like chronic tiredness, recurring yeast infections, and digestive issues. It can also lead to a mouth infection known as thrush — a condition typically ‘treated’ using anti-fungal medications preceded by an x-ray of your esophagus. Now, researchers are highlighting how coconut oil intake can be an alternative solution with far less side effects and concerns.

In their report, the scientists state that coconut oil could be ‘an effective alternative to chemical additives’ in most dental hygiene products. This refers to the many sulfate chemicals linked to numerous conditions, added fluoride, and many others.

It is important to ensure that you purchase the right kind of high quality coconut oil when purchasing it online or from your local supermarket. An important consideration is that the scientists conducting the study may have actually used an inferior low quality coconut oil, meaning that the results may have actually been even more positive if they were to use a 100% organic, extra virgin source. As a general rule of thumb, just as with vitamins and other supplements, avoid purchasing a generic brand of non-organic coconut oil from your local chain supermarket.

Instead, look for a USDA certified organic or 100% organic label that is unrefined and cold-pressed. Personally, I would ~recommend Nutiva’s coconut oil on Vitacost for a high quality source that isn’t going to be highly expensive (I have no ties to either company).  As a side note, coconut oil is also great to store as a preparedness food as it has a very long shelf life and is packed full of nutrients.

Hawaii toddler dies after dental procedure

Hawaii toddler dies after dental procedure

Today, I read a disturbing article on CNN about a toddler who died of brain damage from a dental visit.  I’m not exactly sure what happened, but regardless a toddler should not have died as a result of a dental visit.  Again, parents it is vital to extensively research medical facilities and professionals whom are you entrust your children to. Please read and share.  The original article can be found at:

Finley Boyle, a 3-year-old Hawaiian girl who suffered massive brain damage after undergoing a dental procedure last month, died Friday night, her family’s lawyer said Saturday. The girl died with her relatives in attendance at Hospice Hawaii’s Kailua home, said the lawyer, L. Richard Fried Jr., of Cronin, Fried, Sekiya, Kekina & Fairbanks. Her parents are suing a Kailua, Hawaii, dentist, alleging negligence and dangerous conduct.

The lawsuit, filed against Lilly Geyer and her practice, Island Dentistry for Children, alleges improper medications with incorrect dosages were administered to the girl on December 3, according to court documents filed this week.  “As a direct and proximate result of the medications administered to (Finley) by defendants, (Finley) suffered cardiac arrest during her dental procedure,” the lawsuit says. It alleges that, as a further result of improper medications, Finley “suffered severe and permanent brain damage.”

Geyer and her attorney, John Nishimoto, did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment. The Island Dentistry website states it has been permanently closed and directs patients to an e-mail address.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Hawaii’s First Circuit Court, alleges that Geyer had no plan in place to respond to medical emergencies, such as the one Finley suffered. It seeks unspecified damages.  Finley’s mother, Ashley Boyle, said she first took her daughter to the dentist in November, when she was told her daughter needed six fillings and four root canals, she said. They returned in December to undergo the root canals, Boyle said. The parents allege that Finley was sedated and left unmonitored for 26 minutes.  Finley was moved from a hospital to a hospice in late December.  Finley’s pediatric neurologist, Dr. Gregory Yen, said MRIs showed the girl suffered severe brain damage and that she was in a “persistent vegetative state.”
